Why the MOT date matters

An MOT is the yearly test that says a vehicle over three years old is safe and clean enough to be on the road. The certificate runs out on a fixed date, and nobody posts you a reminder you can rely on. Miss it and the vehicle is off the road as far as the law is concerned — even if it's sat there running perfectly.

What happens if you drive without a valid MOT

Driving without one can cost you a fine of up to £1,000. If the vehicle turns out to be in a dangerous condition, that climbs to £2,500, three penalty points and a possible driving ban. Insurance is the bigger sting: most policies lean on the vehicle being roadworthy, so a lapsed MOT can leave you arguing with an insurer after a prang. The only legal trips without one are to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs.

How often should you check

Once a month is plenty for one vehicle, and you can book the test up to a month minus a day before it expires without losing any time off the certificate. Run a handful of vehicles and monthly checks by hand get missed — that's exactly the job FleetGuv does in the background, pulling the same official DVSA record and nudging you before anything runs out.
